Top Christmas Markets

Basel, Switzerland

When: November 28 – December 23, 2019

Where: Barfüsserplatz, Münsterplatz, and Claraplatz

Market Hours: Daily, 11:00 AM – 8:30 PM

Spread across three different sites within Basel, this Christmas market is one of Europe’s most impressive. Over 160 artisans bring goods to sell in traditional, rustic wooden chalets. Plus, there’s no shortage of Christmas culinary favorites: waffles, glühwein, Basel Läckerli (a gingerbread), raclette, or sausage.

Lining the Rhine River, the Basel Christmas Market is one of the best in Europe. It features three plazas of festivities across the city .


Strasbourg, France

When: November 22 – December 30, 2019; closed on Christmas Day

Market hours: Hours vary but most stalls are open til 9pm on Fridays and 10pm on Saturdays

Strasbourg is home to one of Europe’s oldest Christmas markets, having first begun in 1570. Over 300 stalls set up each year all across the city. Strasbourg is a unique blend of German and French culture, since it shares a border with Germany to the east. When you’ve had your fill of Christmas cheer, consider exploring the Alsatian Museum. (Alsatian is the term for the region.) Each year, the museum decorates in traditional Alsatian Christmas tradition. You’ll feel like you’ve been transported back in time to rural Christmases past.

Santurantikuy Market

When: December 24 – 25, 2019

Where: Main square in Cusco, Peru

Market Hours: All day

The name for this very unique market comes from the local Quechua language. “Santurantikuy” translates to “the selling of the saints” and has been a Peruvian tradition for over 500 years ever since the first days of the Spanish colonization. Originally, the market only sold Christmas-related items. In recent times, however, Peru has seen an uptick in tourism. Consequently, vendors offer a larger variety of local goods to appease tourists. While you’ll certainly find the traditional nativity figures and scenes for sale, you’ll also find candles, toys, textiles, clothing, wall décor, and ceramics.

Wellington Underground Christmas Market

When: December 7 – 8; 14 -15; 21 – 22

Where: Under Frank Kitts Park Jervois Quay, Wellington Waterfront – Wellington, New Zealand

Market Hours: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM


Eleven months of the year, this lovely market is home to craft vendors, but in December, it transforms into a marvelous DIY Christmas celebration. Over 90 local artists and crafters set up stalls, and you’ll find a delicious variety of street food vendors.

Franschhoek Village Christmas Market – South Africa

When: December 21 – 23, 2019
